It's bee 25 years since the murder of a Phoenix woman and DNA evidence has finally resulted in an arrest.

The 27 year-old victim was attacked in her apartment after she came from a dance.

Authorities say it appears to be a random attack, which may have been why it was so hard to solve.

The DNA evidence however has linked Cudellious Love to the killer.

The family and friends of Laura Hunding have been waiting 25 years for justice. Her close friend remembers recently getting the call she'd hoped for.

"It was a mixture of emotion; there is the anger that comes up, relief that closure could actually happen," said Katherine Johnson.

Hunding was 27 back in 1989 when she was sexually assaulted and stabbed to death in her Phoenix apartment.

Investigators were able to collect DNA evidence from her clothes and despite searches of DNA records over the years they couldn't find a match until a few months ago. Thanks to a recent drug conviction, Cudellious Love's DNA was entered into the state database, and that is how police identified their suspect.

"25 years, 25 years to bring closure to this family, I am very proud of our employees," said Chief Daniel Garcia.

Love denies any involvement in the crime, and there were no witnesses. Investigators say that someone else having a similar DNA profile are 1 in 110 quadrillions.

"We generally feel pretty good when we have that kind of evidence to present," said Maricopa County Bill Montgomery.

Hunding's family and friends also thanked the detective who tracked down the suspect.

"We look forward to the day we can stand before the defendant, Cudellious Love, and learn how he spent every minute the last 25 years free, every minute of the life Laura could not live, how could he live his life without acknowledging the pain he caused so many people," said Katherine Johnson.

Cudellious Love has been booked into the 4th avenue jail for 1st degree murder.
