Census figures show Michigan's aging population

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (AP) -- The U.S. Census Bureau says the population of Michigan continues to get older as a whole at a faster rate than some other states.

According to data released Thursday by the Census Bureau, the state's median age increased to 39.5 years, up from 38.9 years in 2010. The state's population is listed as the 10th oldest nationwide, up from 12th. The age group that grew the fastest was 65 to 74.

The Detroit News reports figures also show more people died than were born in 48 of Michigan's 83 counties.

Meanwhile, estimates show the population decline in Wayne County continues, while Detroit's suburbs are growing less than 1 percent overall. Nearly 64,000 left Wayne County from 2010 to summer 2013, sending the population down 2.5 percent to 1.79 million.
