Puppies rescued from hot moving truck in Florida

Posted: Updated:
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Seven puppies and their mother had to be rescued from a parked moving truck that was left in the sun with the windows rolled up at a Florida apartment complex on Sunday.

The Fort Myers Police Department reports that they found a 2-year-old pit bull panting in the front passenger seat and heard cries coming from inside the hot cab of the truck. Officers were able to open the door and found a litter of 2-week-old puppies in a box on the floorboard.

Officers called for an EMS unit after noticing that a few of the puppies were barely moving and breathing. Rescue workers gave the puppies oxygen while residents pitched in by bringing out tubs of water and bathing the pups.

The owner of the vehicle, Dustin Michael Unwin, 28, of Holiday, Florida, eventually showed up at the scene. He was arrested on animal cruelty charges.

Police say the dogs were in the truck for about 45 minutes. They credit a 911 call as well as the quick, cooperative actions by officers, rescue workers and residents for keeping the dogs alive.

The high temperature for Fort Myers on Sunday was 96 degrees.
