MESA, Ariz. - We're learning new details about a 3 year-old killed in a hit and run accident.

She had just come home from church with her family when it happened.

Her family believes she may have been chasing after a cat when she ran across the parking lot. That's when a white SUV hit her and took off.

Witnesses told police that the driver turned around again, passed the little girl and her family, but still did not stop.

3 year-old Jacqueline Mendoza was hit by an SUV on Sunday. Her last moments were spent in her father's arms as they waited for paramedics.

"My sister was cute, wonderful, and she was a good girl, she was sweet," said Janitha Mendoza.

Janitha Mendoza tried to stop her little sister from running across the parking lot at an apartment complex near Rio Salado and Alma School. Jacqueline had just gotten home from church and were getting out of the car when it happened.

"She was nice, cute, and she was fun to play with," said Erika Mendoza.

Neighbors made a memorial for the 3 year-old. Mesa Police believe they found the SUV that hit Jacqueline in the parking lot complex later that night. A person of interest was questioned but not arrested.

"I wish she didn't die, I wish she would still stay over here with us," said Janithza.

The SUV was seized by Mesa Police, and it'll be processed for evidence. Police say leaving the scene of an accident is still a felony, even if it wasn't your fault.
