CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A South Side mother of five was fatally shot in an apparent drive-by shooting early Wednesday on the Dan Ryan Expressway in what police are calling “an isolated incident.”

Shots were fired about 4 a.m. at a Dodge Caravan with three people inside, traveling in the southbound lanes of the Ryan (I-90/94) near the 55th Street exit, police said.

Family members identified the 24-year-old driver, who was shot in the head and killed, as Jasmine Curry, according to a statement from Illinois State Police. A female passenger was unhurt and is cooperating with police.

A second passenger, a male, ran from the scene and authorities are trying to locate him, police said.

Several lanes of the expressway were closed for the investigation Wednesday, but all were open again as of 12:30 p.m., according to state police.

State Police have identified the suspect’s vehicle as a silver Dodge Interpid.

State Police Capt. Luis Gutierrez said authorities were still interviewing witnesses and checking footage from surveillance cameras in the area early Wednesday.

The minivan belonged to Curry, and she often used it to take her children to school and daycare, her cousin Ieshia Curry, 19, said.

Curry said her cousin was planning to start a new job at a clothing store on Wednesday.

“She was a sweet person, she was kind, outgoing,” Curry said. “She would do anything for anybody.”

Curry said the family is still recovering from the loss of Jasmine Curry’s younger brother, who was shot and killed in a drive-by slaying in another location last year.

“Everyone was messed up about it,” Ieshia Curry said.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office could not immediately confirm the fatality Wednesday morning.
