Tick Season Running Rampant In Pa., N.J.

Posted: Updated:

You've got to watch out for ticks. The Lyme Disease problem in our area is now the worst in the nation.

Pennsylvania has more cases than any other state, and New Jersey is close on its heels, coming in with the third most cases.

It has become so bad that just two weeks ago Pennsylvania created a 20-person "tick task force" to combat the problem.

You know deer ticks, the Lyme Disease carriers, are very small and hard to spot. And it's difficult in this heat for children to wear long-sleeves and pants.

So, experts recommend insect repellent clothing, DEET, and frequent checks.

That's how our own Dr. Mike Cirigliano, of Penn Medicine, found his child's case.

"Lo and behold, he gets a bath this past weekend, and wife says, 'Oh, he's got a rash. I think he might have eczema.' Well, I took a picture and you know what? That is the Erythema chronicum migrans rash of Lyme Disease," Dr. Mike said.

Experts say you need to treat a tick bite right away with antibiotics. Boys ages 5 to 9 are most at risk, followed by men who are 45 to 55.

FOX 29's Karen Hepp has more details in this video report.

Insurance policies have rules governing what's covered and what's not. Generally, they make sense. The rules are designed to prevent unreasonable costs from being passed along to the insurer, and by extension to other insurance customers. But listen to Sheree Kober's story.
