Lights out over lunch hour in Tempe: Bad news for restaurants along Mill Avenue

Posted: Updated:
TEMPE, Ariz. - It was lights out on Mill Avenue during the lunch hour as shops and restaurants were shut down for hours on Friday.

"We have just locked up the store," said David Joplin, who works on Mill Avenue.

Restaurants had to turn customers away.

"We have had a lot come to the door and shake it and try to get in and we have to tell people that it's out," said Mariah Mullins, a Zipps Sports Grill employee.

Arizona Public Service says the outage affected just over 700 customers.

"I just got here and there is a sign on the door that says power outage," said a man trying to ship packages at the post office.

In this area, many of those APS customers are large office buildings, shops and restaurants and the lunch hours tend to be some of the busiest.

"We were just coming out and we noticed all lights were out," said one woman, while another added, "It is deserted.. they look like they are closed."

As police directed traffic, firefighters rescued people from stuck elevators.

We were there as a mother and baby appeared to be pulled from a parking garage elevator.

APS says a construction crew dug into an underground power line which caused the outage.

"This is our main business during the 9 to 5 because you get everybody walking up and down Mill," said Joplin.

"I walked in the kitchen and usually there are all these noises going on.. there is nothing.. everyone is just sitting around waiting," said Victoria Ivankic, a Zipps Sports Grill employee.

In all, APS says the outage affected 709 customers.  It went out between 10 and 11 a.m. Friday morning and was back on just after 2 p.m.
