MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

A stranger trying to help a little boy have a special day made a mini-superstar after 8-year-old Dylan Spoering advertised he would give a free piano concert using a simple sign in his front yard.

Out on the front porch of the blue house on the corner, something big happened.

"I thought 15 or 20 people would come," Thomas Rehbein admitted. "This is pretty wild."

Neighbors, family, friends -- and friends of friends -- put their umbrellas up to watch Spoering have a moment in time. It was a simple gesture that blossomed into so much more. After seeing the yard sign promoting the free piano performance, a man who had never met Spoering spoke with the 8-year-old about his plan and asked his parents for permission to post about the event on Facebook.

"I think it's really important to encourage kids to think big and dream big instead of just telling them, 'Oh, your ideas are silly,'" Rehbein explained.

It quickly went viral, which seemed to surprise everyone but Spoering himself. In fact, he worked the crowd like a pro. From 2:30 p.m. until 3:20, he played and his fans soaked up every bit of it. After three songs, Spoering called for an intermission and cookie break. By then, fans already wanted his autograph.

"I'm a huge fan," Monica Rush said. "I've been following him for about a week now."

The event was also streamed live, and about 10,000 people from around the world tuned in. That has left the young Minnesota musician feeling pretty famous.

"It makes you feel really good that the world is really cool and people are really sweet, makes me feel good about my community that they would do something like this to make a little kid feel like a rock star for a half an hour," Rehbein said.

When it comes to drag racing, rocket-type speed is the name of the game -- but that also means things can go wrong very quickly, and a double crash at a Brainerd, Minn., track is another grim reminder.
