Dog Looking For New Home After Being Dumped, Attacked By Boar

Posted: Updated:

TAMPA BAY- A boxer-mix named River is all smiles now, thanks to the lady at the end of her new leash.

"We saw this dog out there, mingling. And we just figured it was the ranger's dog," said Petra Squires.

Squires was horseback riding in the Green Swamp on Friday when she stumbled upon the pup.

When she finished her ride, the dog was waiting.

"She rolled over, and I saw she had a huge chest wound," said squires.

This little lady went to the right woman.

Petra's a vet tech at blue pearl veterinary partners.

They believe River was attacked by a wild boar and was likely dumped by her owner.

Wild hogs are known to be extremely aggressive.

"Hogs Gone Wild" a discovery channel special, showed the damage they cause as the root through the yards of bay area neighborhoods.

They have no natural predators, and no fear.

"A lot of the injuries were to the chest area which is very common. Often times the boar attacks the injuries are to the chest and the head...because dogs are very curious, so they often lead with their face," said Blue Pearl vet Eric Mears.

But stitches and dental work are already helping those wounds heal.

Now, the elderly dog is getting a hand, from second chance boxer rescue, to finally find her a loving family.

"She's very sweet. All she needs is a bed, a bowl full of food, a little affection. She wants to be close to people," said Bill Gray of Second Chance Rescue.

It's a final wish, as River lives out her later years, peace and a place to call home.

"We always wonder what their lives were like before. We can't do anything about that, but moving forward, we can give her a good life and we intend to," said Gray.
