CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Four children were among five people injured Monday night when an SUV collided with a horse-drawn carriage on the Near North Side.

The SUV, traveling westbound on West Grand Avenue, rear-ended the carriage about 11:30 p.m. near North Desplaines Street, said police News Affairs Officer Ronald Gaines.

The 25-year-old woman driving the horse-drawn carriage was taken in serious-to-critical condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, authorities said. There were no passengers in the carriage.

Four children, who were passengers in the SUV, were taken to Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, said Chicago Fire Department spokesman Joe Roccasalva. Three other occupants of the SUV declined medical treatment.

The children -- three boys, ages 1, 4 and 10, and one 6-year-old girl -- all suffered non-life-threatening injuries, Gaines said.

As of 5:45 a.m., all five individuals had been treated and released, Gaines said. No charges have been filed in connection with the crash.
