Grosse Pointe Woods teens charged in defacing Detroit buildings

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) - Three teens from Grosse Pointe Woods are facing a five-year felony for allegedly spray painting graffiti on two buildings in downtown Detroit.

The Wayne County prosecutor's office says 18-year-old Isabella Meteer, 17-year-old Mackenzie Snitgen and 17-year-old Mary Elizabeth Harder have been charged with one count of malicious destruction of a building. Each received a $5,000 personal bond.

"If they're guilty of these offenses then it's just a lapse in judgment, a silly prank gone wrong," says Harder's attorney, Samuel Churikian.

"At this point in time, we don't know. And we're just going to see what the system says," says Meteer's attorney Eric Goze.

In Fox 2's Amy Lange's report you can see the images caught on security cameras June 22. They were widely distributed by business mogul Dan Gilbert in an effort to gather tips and catch the vandals.

Detroit police say with a new graffiti task force in place their message is clear.

"These graffiti artists that impact the quality of life for our citizens - done. It's over. We're not going to tolerate this anymore," says Detroit Police Sgt. Michael Woody.

"It's other people's property - you don't mess with other people's property. We all understand that. Like I said, if they're guilty of this - if they're guilty of this, it's a lapse in judgement," says Churikian.

Churikian says Harder just graduated from Grosse Pointe North and is planning to attend Western Michigan University in the fall.

"Keep in mind these are kids who've never been in trouble in their lives. They're in high school or have graduated form high school. My client is college bound.  They're nice young ladies and they come from a good community, good families and their families are very supportive of them," Churikian says.

The three are due back in court July 22.
