Mother, son dead after accident with semi in St. Clair County

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) - The St. Clair County Sheriff's Department says two people have died after an accident involving a semi at Burch and Lakeshore roads in Burtchville Township.

A 15-year-old driver with a learner's permit was turning when the Ford Explorer was T-boned by the semi, the sheriff's department says. The driver and his mother have died.

The driver's 21-year-old sister was in the backseat. She was treated for minor injuries and has been released from the hospital.

The family is said to be from Wixom and was heading to Lakeport State Park to camp.

The department says the semi continued after the crash and struck a sign at Duffy's Tavern. The car and semi also hit a car parked in the lot.

The semi truck driver, a man in his 70s, was checked at the scene but refused treatment.

The department says neither drugs nor alcohol are believed to be a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.
