Third Water Main Break This Week Adds To LA Water Woes

(FOX 11 / CNS) A third water main break in about 24 hours briefly flooded a Highland Park street early today.

The latest break occurred about 12:30 a.m. in an 80-year-old cast-iron main near North Avenue 54 and Monte Vista Street, said Gale Harris of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. Harris said 19 customers lost water service as a result of the break.

Harris said one eastbound lane of Monte Vista was closed between North Avenue 54 and North Avenue 55 while crews worked to handle the problem.

Two water main breaks were reported on Thursday -- in Highland Park about 1 a.m. and in Silver Lake about 7 a.m.

Jackhammers were sounding off all morning on Monte Vista and Avenue 55 in Highland Park as utility crews worked to repair a ruptured water main that broke under the street at around 12:30 in the morning.

Water flooded the street and overflowed onto the sidewalk threatening houses and 19 businesses.

This was the second water main break in 24 hours in the area. Thursday another major break at York Blvd and N. Avenue 53 left 23 customers without water. That break happened at around 1:30am This past Tuesday, crews responded to another water main in Venice. DWP says they don't believe they're related.
