Gaggle Of Geese Making A Mess Of Emmaus Park

Posted: Updated:

Emmaus, Pa.-They may be Canada's least popular export: geese, or more exactly, goose droppings.

They've become a major nuisance in a Lehigh County park, and no amount of human intervention can drive them away.

FOX 29'S Bruce Gordon spent the day in Emmaus.

Doug Tran figured this was the perfect day to take his young son DJ to Furnace Dam Park for a little fishing.

There were plenty of little fish in the pond. However, there were also plenty of big geese, Canada geese.

And they had left behind, plenty of goose poop. According to residents in the area, it's been a problem for years.

The behavior of the geese suggests they're used to being fed by park patrons. What goes in one end, tends to come out the other.

The result, a minefield for anyone who dares to set foot outside their car.

"It's a mess. I don't know what you can do about it, but it's really a mess," said one park-goer.

"I came over here like, twice, but I don't like walking with my head down," said another.

Emmaus Borough officials set up a pair of fake swans in the pond, hoping they would scare the poopy pests away.

If anything, the geese just seem to ignore the phony threat, after they were toppled over in a recent storm.

The newest plan; solar powered lights flicked on and off throughout the night.

The goal is to disrupt the geese's sleeping pattern so they'll fly away.

The brutal irony here? Sitting right there on the park property, not 30 feet from the pond is a public bathroom. The signage couldn't be clearer.
