Former cops open vintage American barbershop

GILBERT, Ariz. - Most every man would agree, there's nothing like a good haircut and clean shave, the old fashioned kind from an old-school barber.

There's a new shop that offers just that, and more.

"All the girls are going to be chasing you down when I'm done with you," said Carlos Gatelum.

Carlos Gastelum takes pride in his work.

"I've always had a passion for hair," he said.

For him precision is key, details of the utmost importance, nothing goes unnoticed.

"Who cut your hair last time," said Gastelum.

Traits some might say could be uncommon for the untrained eye, but definitely not for a former police officer.

"I have a 21-year background in law enforcement, I worked for the Mesa Police Department for the last 21 years," he said.

"It's much nicer to come somewhere where someone isn't chasing you," said Javier Cota.

Javier Cota, a co-owner with Gatelum, retired after 27 years with the Mesa Police Department and other agencies. The two opened the American Vintage Barbershop inside the Seville Country Club in Gilbert. They describe it as upscale luxury with an old-school vibe, and the chairs were made in 1942, a modern twist.

According the owners it's about more than a good haircut and a clean shave.

"The smell, the comradery, the conversation, the good family values," said Gastelum.

The men are ex-cops, the friends hope to teach others what it's like to make memories.
