House lawmakers have given the green light to a bill aimed at revamping the embattled Veterans Affairs Department.

The 16.3 billion dollar measure is aimed at helping veterans avoid long wait times for health care.

Under the proposal, ten billion dollars in emergency money would be used to pay private doctors to treat qualifying veterans who can't get a prompt appointment with a VA doctor.

Another five billion would be used to hire more VA doctors and nurses.

And 1.3 billion would go to leasing new clinics across the country.

The bill now heads to the senate, where it's expected to be approved later this week.
