Suspect Charged in Shooting Death of 3-Year-Old

PHILADELPHIA -

Philadelphia police have arrested and charged Douglas Woods, 22, of Philadelphia, in the shooting death of a 3-year-old girl, killed Friday night.

Woods is charged with Murder, 3 counts of Attempted Murder, and other charges.

Fox 29 spoke with the parents of 3-year-old Tynirah Borum, moments after getting word that a suspect was arrested by police.

"I feel so good right now. God is good all the time and I knew that this would come to an end. I'm just so glad right now," said Tamika Borum, the mother of Tynirah.

Briheim Rice, father of the 3-year-old, described his daughter, "Tynirah was full of life. Loved everybody she was around. Everybody in the neighborhood loved her."

Family and friends gathered on the sidewalk on the 1500 block of Etting St, right where Tynirah died less than 24 hours before. They lit candles and left teddy bears in her memory.

The toddler’s death continued a disturbing trend of children being killed in the city this summer.

The community says they're sick of innocent victims being killed. They voiced their concerns earlier in the day on Saturday, before an arrest had been made.

"We fired up! Can't take it no more,” shouted a community outraged by the latest act of senseless violence marched through the Grays Ferry section of the city.

"This is not the Middle East. This is not a war zone. This is a neighborhood,” PA State Rep Jordan Harris told the group.

Witnesses said a woman was braiding 3-year-old Tynirah Borum's hair when they got caught in the crossfire..

"They came up and sprayed the porch with a baby on it and a woman on it, so they was the cowards out of the situation. You know it's just a sin that my Goddaughter had to pay the cost,” Borum’s godmother Isabelle Bennett said.

Investigators said a bullet pierced the toddler's chest.

Tamika Borum's only child died at the hospital.

"She was so bright and energetic. She was just a happy baby," Tamika Borum said.

Police said the target of the shooting, the woman braiding Borum's hair and another man were also hit.

They said the gunfire stems from an argument.

Borum's family said they're sick of thugs causing problems in their neighborhood.

"Y'all need to go somewhere else with that. All these killings with innocent kids. They ain't even seen life yet and you're taking it away from them,” Bennett said.

Family and neighbors described Borum as a light in their lives.

Now they're left with only memories of a life cut short much too soon.

Police said the target of the shooting is in critical condition, while the two other people shot are listed in stable condition on Saturday.

Borum is the 8th child that has been killed in the city in the past month.
