Details emerge in sex assault case against Mesa officer

Posted: Updated:
MESA, Ariz. - New details are coming out after a Mesa Police Department officer is arrested, accused of inappropriately touching three women during traffic stops.

34-year-old Justin Cherry is charged with two counts of sexual assault and one count of molesting a child under the age of 15

"He's not a menace to society, he's been a police officer for 13 years... this guy is a model police officer and frankly I'm befuddled as to why we were even here," said Robert Kavanaugh.

Officer Justin Cherry's attorney denies the allegations made against his client. Cherry's first appearance was held hours after a grand jury indicted him, charging the officer with two counts of sex assault and one count of molestation.

"This particular 14-year-old has given 2-3 different stories as to how that happened, indirect touching if anything, and it was a pat down," said Kavanaugh.

Police say two women also came forward claiming that Officer Cherry sexually assaulted them while they were in custody.

"Allegations from dopers, who allege he had digital penetration during pat downs in both cases. Officer Cherry has denied even touching these women; he didn't even do a pat down, however the grand jury believed that happened," he said.

Cherry turned himself in on Friday; he had been on paid administrative leave since the allegations first surfaced.

A judge ordered that Cherry be held without bond.
