Montco Prosecutor's Daughter Joins Israel Defense Force As 'Lone Soldier'

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Pa. -

A brief cease-fire has done little to temper tensions. On Monday, an attack on an Israeli bus killed one person in Jerusalem.

More than 1800 Palestinians and more than 60 Israelis have died in the three and a half week conflict. And a young woman from our area is right there in the middle of it all.

She is what is known as a "lone soldier," which is someone who feels a calling to enlist to help fight for the Israel defense forces.

It's something she just felt compelled to do. She volunteered right after high school, and went through Israel’s basic training. Now, she's 20 and right on the border. Her father is Montgomery County Prosecutor Brad Richman. He's very proud, and a little worried.

Rebecca Richman is living her dream, which is to do something you believe in, especially if it's not easy. She’s learned Arabic, how to take apart a M-16, and how one person can make a difference.

“By far the greatest emotion I feel is pride, incredibly proud of her. I worry about her, but I’m not too sure any of us are safe," said her father.

On Rebecca's blog, 'It's Always Sunny in Beit She'an' she credits her inspiration to another Philadelphian Michael Levin, a lone soldier who lost his life almost exactly 8 years ago. She says she was very influenced by his journey.

As a veteran prosecutor, Brad Richman wears a pin on his heart and a poker face in court, but he chokes up when he thinks about how his daughter is changing. Just in the last few weeks, two American lone soldiers have been killed in this conflict. Rebecca and her dad, text all the time and call when they can. She will be finished her service in December.
