St. Clair Shores hit hard by flooding from Monday storms

Posted: Updated:

On Monday there was first, the storm - then the flooding. Moments after, a mess in St. Clair Shores.

The heavy rain led to one heck of a big problem.

"My basement is totally flooded," said Susan Belcher.

She's not the only one. Several streets in St. Clair Shores flooded too. Marter, Edgewood, greater Mack and Edmondton - and that's just a few.

"We had cars coming down the street thinking you can make it obviously you can't," said Ryan Belfry. "They think that it doesn't look that deep, I can make it. It is that deep."

It looked like a block party but some people can't get back into their homes. So they were riding, rafting, running through it.

Fox 2 never stopped running into residents, trying to find the good in the bad, but others are just mad.

"I'm sick and tired of it, St. Clair Shores has got to do something," said Melanie Aurand.

"I don't know if it's a drainage issue or what the issue might be," Belfry said

They want know so Fox 2 went to get answers from interim City Manager Mike Smith.

"We got three inches of rain in an hour which is something the system isn't designed to handle," he said. "The Milk River was at its crest and it couldn't take anymore water and to add on to that, our pumps lost electrical power from (DTE) our folks put it on backup power as quickly as they could.

"I am confident that by tomorrow morning everything will be back down to where they should be. Hopefully sooner than that."
