PCSO unveils new crime fighting app

Posted: Updated:
PINAL COUNTY, Ariz. - A new crime fighting tool is making its way to Pinal County, and it will be right at your fingertips.

The county is testing a new app that will turn your phone into a surveillance camera and upload information right to law enforcement.

"Local families, moms, dads, neighbors, helping each other sharing information, being proactive, and keeping their neighborhoods safe," said Sheriff Paul Babeu.

The ICE Blackbox App was designed to let regular people report suspicious activity directly to law enforcement.

"Not just texting 911, but literally sending photographs and video to the 911 communication center, it's never been done in the State of Arizona," he said.

The photos, videos, and your GPS location is sent to 911 where it's evaluated. If a crime is determined to be legitimate, the information is sent right to deputies responding.

"Imagine that you have an abducted child and a partial plate, or suspect information is gathered and immediately uploaded to the sheriff's office, imagine how that could help us do our job," said Babeu.

The creators of the app also hope that knowing people are watching will be a deterrent for criminals.

"If something starts to escalate out of control, you want to get out of that situation. You now have the ability to start recording and the sheriff now has access to that information for evidence," said Edward Horcasitas.

However, they do caution that once the video is uploaded, it belongs to law enforcement.

"If they do use it illegally, in someone else's house, or restroom you know, that is against the law. That video can actually be used against the person who uploaded the video," said Horcasitas.
