ARMADA, Mich. (WJBK) -  It was an emotional scene in Armada Thursday honoring the life of a girl, whose murder remains a mystery.

"We miss you, we love you, we'll see you again in heaven," said Sabrina Shaffer.

A large crowd gathered to pay tribute to April Millsap, launching lanterns to the night sky at 8:20 p.m.

"That's the time that they lost an angel." said Shaffer, a friend of April's.

"I hope that wherever you are, you are smiling and you are happy," said Mia Kelley, a cousin of April. "And you are going to be beautiful forever."

April who was, 14,  was murdered. Her body found two weeks ago to the day  -- along the Macomb Orchard Trail.

Detectives tell Fox 2, that the Armada teen  was attacked.

She was brutally beaten and choked to death. She was walking her dog, her daily routine, when someone took her life. It was her dog, her best friend, that stayed with her until she was discovered by strangers.

Supporter Dan Dillingham said, "That's the only way its going to get solved is if we keep talking about it."

At the moment, when supporters  let go of the lanterns, loved ones, family and friends choose to remember April in life and reflect on that light, that shined when she smiled.

"Every time I looked at her, she always had a smile on her face, that's what always gave me hope," said Shaffer.

Armada is a small town, a close community and many who call it home, showed up to release lanterns for April.

"When you see this outcome of love and care," Kelley said. "It helps you walk when you think you can't walk anymore."

A task force was formed to hunt down the person responsible for this homicide. the FBI is also involved.

A sketch was released of a man seen in the area where April was found. and a small scooter or motorcycle may have been spotted on the path.

Family and friends are hoping someone with information about the crime comes forward.

"Being an uninvolved bystander is just as bad as somebody who committed the crime," Kelley said.
