The Charlotte Hornets announced they would be submitting a bid for the NBA All-Star Weekend in either 2017 or 2018 Tuesday. A lot has to happen for that to take place, but that announcement has a lot of Charlotte's pro basketball fans excited.

If the league were to accept Charlotte's bid, it would be the first time the event has happened at Time Warner Cable Arena, but not the first time Charlotte hosted the NBA's Showcase Event.

Back in 1991, just three years into the original Charlotte Hornets' first run, the NBA brought its All-Star Weekend to the Queen City.

Stars like Will Smith and Kid N' Play came into town for NBC's Stay In School Jam on Saturday afternoon, while the Chicago Bulls' Craig Hodges beat Terry Porter in the three-point shootout, hitting a ridiculous 19 shots in a row. The weekend's signature event was the Slam Dunk Contest, (which featured a forgettable performances by Hornets Kendall Gill and Rex Chapman) in which Shawn Kemp put together some of the greatest dunks in a losing performance as Dee Brown pumped his way into the history books.

The game itself was a pretty good one, with the East edging out the West 116-114. Current Hornets owner Michael Jordan scored a game-high 26 points (while turning the ball over 10 times) while Hornets assistant Patrick Ewing added 18 points and 10 rebounds.

It's safe to say, if the Hornets are awarded the All-Star Game again, they'll have a lot to look up to.
