Dead Poets Society Actors Remember Robin Williams

Posted: Updated:
MIDDLETOWN, Del. -

Dead Poets Society, one of Robin Williams' most memorable performances, was shot right here in our area.

On Tuesday, actors who were in the film took a look back at the days on the set with him in Delaware.

FOX 29's Chris O'Connell reports.

It was 25 years ago, when Robin Williams came to the Everett Theatre in Middletown, Delaware, to film Dead Poets Society. And even in his death, his presence is still being felt.

The actor spent more than a month back in 1989 in the area.

"Something I'll remember for the rest of my life," said Chuck Kuzminski.

Kuzminski remembers those days well. At 16-years old he met Robin Williams while working as an extra on Dead Poets Society.

“He made a wonderful impression. He was just a real generous and friendly person,” said Kuzminski.

Kuzminski remembers one long day while filming when Williams broke into an impromptu standup routine between takes to cure the boredom.

"When he finishes his routine, he just comes down and starts talking to everybody, and introducing himself and meeting people and it was really interesting,” he said.

Outside the Everett, the marquee bears his name and a memorial of flowers in his honor. Inside are more memories of Williams, from the seat he sat in during filming, to the call sheet for the films' production.

'"Robin Williams is the Everett Theatre and the Everett Theatre is Robin Williams,” said Rob Stout with the Everett Theatre.

The movie was one of Williams' first serious roles. And one that helped him jump start his career after a battle with drug addiction.

"The Everett in Middletown and Dead Poets revived his career and in reverse Robin Williams' career has kept this theatre open for a 100 years,” said Stout.

Earlier this year, the theatre celebrated the 25th anniversary of the film. Williams could not attend, but he donated autographed memorabilia to help raise money to replace the theatre's 100-year-old movie projector.

The Everett was able to buy a brand new digital movie projector because of Williams' donation, coincidentally installed 3 days before Williams died.

“For the next hundred years every time a movie is shown on that projector it will be the movie that Robin brought you,” said Stout.

Another reminder of Robin Williams, the Everett is about to put on the production a Mid-Summer Night's Dream. The very play that was the focus of Dead Poets Society, which was filmed at the Everett a quarter century ago.
