Goodyear woman accused of trying to drown her baby

Posted: Updated:

28 year-old Phoeteama Neal is in jail tonight facing attempted first degree murder charges after she allegedly tried to drown her 21 month-old daughter.

The photos show Neal, a Staff Sergeant at Luke Air Force Base, still wearing her uniform shortly after being taken into custody by Goodyear Police.

Now we're learning more about what happened inside her apartment that left her baby in critical condition.

According to court documents Neal called 911 after 1:30 p.m. telling the dispatcher, "I just drowned my baby."

Then she said, "she's dead, I did it."

Officers say the baby was placed fully clothed in a bathtub then submerged. A neighbor who saw Phoetama outside holding the limp child, moments after the 911 call, said she looked like a zombie.

As for a motive, the report says Neal was about to be transferred to Turkey and wanted to take her daughter with her. A Maricopa County judge ruled that the child would have to stay with the biological father, an airman based in California.

Luke Air Force Base issued a brief statement on the arrest. "We are aware Goodyear Police have taken an airmen into custody. Obviously this is a tragic incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the child and the family. We will continue to cooperate with Goodyear detectives as they investigate the matter."

28-year-old Phoeteama Janiece Neal is being held on a $1 million bond on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder.
