Officials say trash should be cleared soon

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) - Garbage trucks, haul away debris from street after street in Berkley Wednesday.

Workers sweat in the sun, through miles and miles of stink.

"Right now we start at 7," said Ryan Martinez, of Tringali Sanitation. "And we work until 9 at night. And I'm on my 11th days of work. Piles keep coming and coming."

"We did Huntington Woods, took us about five days to get one city done," Martinez said. "If you drive around it doesn't look like we touched it. Endless amounts."

Piles can still be seen in Huntington Woods, Royal Oak, Madison Heights, Hazel Park, Warren and Oak Park among others.

"This will always be known as the great flood of 2014," said Warren Mayor Jim Fouts.

Fouts says they've taken one million pounds of garbage since last Monday's storm and are expecting three million by the end of the week. Estimating overtime to cost the city $500,000 -- and damages, even more. Taking $10 million already from the city's rainy day fund.

"Last week they estimated that the damage would be $90 to $100 million, today it's approaching $200 million," Fouts said. "The price keeps going up."

It's the same story for surrounding cities - including Oak Park - spending $500,000 with damages up to $50 million Royal Oak -even more.

"Where we got hit was our estimates on private damages," said Royal Oak City Manager Don Johnson. "We're estimating about $120 million of private damage."
