BELLEVILLE, Mich. (WJBK) - Seventeen-year-old Shanari Rush-London thought he could handle the water of Belleville Lake. It was a mistake that cost him his life.

The Van Buren Township Police Department says the 17-year-old's body was found close to 10 a.m Thursday.

"He was found in about 14 to 18 feet of water," said  Chief Dan Besson, Van Buren Township Fire Department.

Investigators say Shanari was with family when he jumped into the lake without a life jacket.

"Several family members decided to go swimming," Besson said. "He jumped in without a life jacket, after a period of a few moments, family discovered he had not resurfaced."

The search for the teen started out as a rescue mission, but turned into a recovery. Divers had to use special equipment to search the vast lake for him.

This is the second drowning in Belleville Lake for the month of August.

Just a few days ago a 50-year-old man drowned after falling into the water as he tried to repair his boat.
