Valley businessman gives donation to family in need

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (KSAZ) - The family says they were already overwhelmed by how many people donated to a GoFundMe account. But now they are blown away by a donation to cover the remainder of the money needed to get a wheelchair accessible van.

Last week FOX 10 introduced you to 6-year-old Reese in this report: http://www.fox10phoenix.com/story/26185676/2014/08/03/wheelchair-van-for-reese

Reese suffers from Aicardi syndrome, a rare medical condition that leaves her immobile with frequent seizures.

Now that she's getting bigger, it's making it more and more difficult for her parents to get her in and out of the car.

"It's just getting to the point where it's not safe for either one of us to get her in the car, and so I just don't anymore unless my husband's home," said Kerry D'Ortenzio.

For years, the family has been thinking about buying a wheelchair accessible van for Reese.

"They're really expensive, and so we've put it off and put it off, and we're like ok, one of these days we'll add that payment and we've put it off to the point where we're like we really do need it," she said.

The family set up a GoFundMe account and within a few weeks they were able to raise $27,000, a bit shy of their $40,000 goal.

We interviewed Reese's family about their request for a van. The story caught the eye of a prominent Arizona business. He wanted to remain anonymous but wanted to help by writing a check for the difference.

"Oh my gosh, that's amazing," said Kelly.

Today FOX 10 delivered the check for $14,000 so the family doesn't have to wait anymore.

"Thank you doesn't seem big enough, but I don't know what else to say but thank you so much, you've inspired me and I hope you've inspired a lot of other people... it's hard to even put into words because it's such a huge gift, and it's from a stranger, you know we're very moved and very grateful," she said.

Reese's mom is hoping to pay it forward in other ways because of the massive show of support.
