Shelby Township residents want oil drilling shut down

SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJBK) -  Residents packed the Palazzo, filling it to capacity to talk about oil drilling in Shelby Township - about 650, who had plenty to say.

"My husband and I were walking back there and we heard this huge clanging," said resident Rita Mahfit.

"It was a surprise, i would be the first we heard about it at ...3:15 on a Saturday morning when the noise started and the texts started coming to my house," said resident Rob Huth, city attorney.

West Bay Exploration of Traverse City wrapped a work on a test well under a permit, approved by the state of Michigan.
"What's going on in this township has not been responsible, the residents living with 24 hour a day noise unregulated is outrageous and the township is going to get its arms around it.

Residents say the drilling is taking place too close to homes, like in subdivisions near 26 mile and Dequindre. Some worry that the oil drilling happening now could eventually lead to fracking.
