US officials visit Nogales site of fatal shooting

Posted: Updated:

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Officials from the U.S. Attorney's Office for Arizona have visited the Nogales site where a 16-year-old teenager was fatally shot in Mexico by a U.S. Border Patrol agent.

Jose Antonio Elena Rodriguez was near the border fence when the agent fired from the U.S. side of the border on Oct. 10, 2012.

The Arizona Daily Star reports that office spokesman Cosme Lopez confirmed that officials from the office were in Nogales on Tuesday. He declined to elaborate.

The Border Patrol has said the teen was among people throwing rocks at agents, endangering their lives. A lawsuit filed July 29 by the boy's mother said he was walking home after playing basketball.

An aunt of the boy said she saw officials taking measurements and examining bullet holes, and the Nogales International newspaper published a photo of investigators at the site
