Phone Rate Plan Wars: T-Mobile vs. Sprint… FIGHT!!

Posted: Updated:
There's a war being fought right now, the Carrier Wars. Promotions are being thrown about left and right and rate plans are falling like anvils in old Wiley Coyote cartoons. The latest salvo is between T-Mobile and Sprint. Here's what you need to know.

You may have seen my article here on the new Family share data plans that Sprint has introduced and you may already be aware of the fact that T-Mobile is aggressively courting subscribers, so they were quick to respond to Sprint's latest offer with an offer of their own for any Simple Choice plan customer: get a friend who has Sprint, AT&T or Verizon to switch and both of you get 12 months of unlimited LTE data for free. What about if you're already on an unlimited data plan? T-Mobile will give you a $10 credit each month for twelve months. Small print on this Unlimited plan doesn't include any data caps, just a roaming cap of 50MB that you should be aware of if you live in an area where you may go in and out of service. Bombardment!

Sprint, not to be outdone, fired back this morning with their own offer: new everyday pricing on their individual line, giving you the $60 Unlimited Plan. Now you can get unlimited talk, text and data for $60 a month and that isn't a limited time promotion. This is now their standard individual unlimited rate plan. That's $20 less per month than T-Mobile's Unlimited plan. The only caveat you should be aware of when looking at Sprint's Unlimited plan is this bit of small print, “With My All-in and Unlimited, My Way, other plans may receive prioritized bandwidth availability and streaming video speeds may be limited to 1Mbps.” There are no data caps in the small print though.

So what do you need to do to take advantage of either of these plans or promotions? The T-Mobile offer requires you to hit this link starting August 29th and fill in your number and your friend's number that they've ported over. When you report a successful port within 30 days of that friend activating with T-Mobile the unlimited LTe data service or bill credit for both of you will start that month, according to their press release. Since Sprint's pricing isn't a promotion, there's nothing special you need to do to take advantage of it. Just switch from your old carrier, or if you're already a Sprint customer, change your plan and get unlimited data for $60 a month. This plan becomes available to everyone beginning tomorrow. Bombardment!

At this point, you may be wondering, “when is he going to tell us which is the better offer and which company we should be switching to?” Well, there's an easy answer to that: the one with better service where you live, work and play most. If it's phones for the tweens/teens, you're also going to consider the quality of service where they go to school and/or spend most of their afterschool and extra-curricular time. No plan is a great plan if you're getting shoddy coverage.
