Criminal sexual assault charges dismissed against Tigers pitcher Evan Reed

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) - A Wayne County Circuit Court judge has dismissed criminal sexual conduct charges against Tigers pitcher Evan Reed.

Reed was charged with third-degree criminal sexual conduct after a woman accused him of sexually assaulting her at a downtown Detroit hotel. He entered a not guilty plea last month during an arraignment.

On Thursday Judge Kenneth King cited that he had credibility issues with the complainant's testimony.

"I'm elated," Reed said. ""I am so elated this nightmare has went on way longer than it should have, as is. I can finally just  focus on my life again, my career. I still wonder how I ever got charged. I am extremely happy.

The 45-year-old woman testified Thursday that former Detroit Tigers pitcher Evan Reed sexually assaulted her at a downtown casino hotel after they met at a suburban bar. The woman testified for about 1½ hours Thursday during a probable cause hearing for Reed, who's charged with third-degree criminal sexual conduct.

The woman says she "blacked out" at the bar March 30 after taking a drink she says tasted "sour" and believes may have been drugged.

She says she remembers nothing until she awoke bruised and dizzy. She says Reed then assaulted her and told her to leave afterward.

Judge Kenneth King explained his decision.

"I think because of the alleged victim's vacillating testimony," he said. "and her inability to remember many parts of the evening. I don't think the people have met their burden of probable cause."

According to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office, after midnight March 30, 2014, Reed and the woman left the bar and went to a hotel located in the 2900 block of Grand River in Detroit.

The woman said that at approximately 7:30 a.m. on the same day, Reed sexually assaulted her in the hotel room.  She further alleges that after the sexual assault Reed instructed her to leave.

Reed said the sex was consensual. His lawyers say she gave differing accounts to authorities and acquaintances.

We get into the race for Governor and that open U.S. Senate seat with the two most political guys in Michigan. The chairmen of the state Republican and Democratic parties join us to talk issues and probably slinging a little mud. Plus, we'll talk to someone who's bringing a branch of the Satanic Temple to Detroit. What do they really believe in? (hint: it's not worshipping the devil)
