Two children injured in fall from Ferris wheel at fair

CHELSEA (WJBK) - Two children were injured when they fell from a Ferris wheel at the Chelsea Community Fair.

Natasha McElrath a 16-year-old soccer player for Chelsea High School and her 8-year-old brother fell to the ground while on the ride

"We're worried about what happened," said Quentin Beck, a Chelsea High classmate. "My heart just sank for a minute I was wishing the best for them."

First responders told Fox 2 that Natasha McElrath was on crutches from a recent injury to her leg and placed  the crutches under the ferris wheel seat.

The crutches extended straight out as the Ferris wheel began to rotate. The crutches became jammed on a bracket bar above the car, causing it to tip forward, spilling them to the ground from 7 to 10 feet in the air.

Both children were rushed to the University of Michigan CS Mott Children's Hospital in critical condition.

Chelsea fair board President Rick Boham told reporters that the children's conditions improved and that all injuries are not life threatening. The 8-year-old did sustain cuts and lacerations to his face.
