A judge set bond at $500,000 Sunday for the father of a 3-year-old boy who was critically hurt in an accidental shooting at a West Side home on Friday night.

James J. Jenkins, 26, faces one felony count of unlawful use of a weapon by a parolee, police announced Sunday morning.

Jenkins allegedly owned the handgun that was accidentally discharged by the boy or a sibling about 7:30 p.m. Friday at their home in the 4300 block of West Monroe.

Jenkins was on the porch with his family when the 3-year-old went inside to change clothes with two of his siblings, ages 5 and 7, prosecutors said.

The adults on the porch heard a gunshot and rushed inside to find the older siblings crying and the boy with a gunshot wound to the head, prosecutors said.

The boy's name is James Jenkins as well, the Sun-Times is reporting.

He was taken in critical condition to Mount Sinai Hospital, officials said. His condition has since been upgraded to “stable,” prosecutors said.

“Everybody is just in shock right now,” the boy's aunt Annette Garvin said on Friday. “We are trying to put everything together.”

Ardell Strong, the boy's great uncle, said the youngster “was a good kid — an average every day kid who liked to play video games.”

Strong added, “This should have never happened.”

Jenkins' criminal history includes at least six convictions for drug-related felonies as well as convictions for soliciting and selling stolen goods, according to court records. His next court date wasn't immediately known.
