CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A man was fatally shot by Chicago Police Sunday night in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side.

About 7:10 p.m., police responded to a complaint of armed men in the 2800 block of West Polk, according to a preliminary police statement. Officers approached the men matching the descriptions in the complaint, and one began running away, police said.

He ran through a gangway and took a gun out from his waistband, police said. An officer told him to drop his weapon, but he went to “an elevated position” and pointed his gun at the officer, according to police.

The officer then shot him, police said.

The man was identified as 19-year-old Roshad McIntosh, of the 1000 block of North Central, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:43 p.m., authorities said.

A weapon was recovered from the scene, police said. No officers were injured.

The Independent Police Review Authority was notified about the shooting and was investigating, according to spokesman Larry Merritt.

Larry Patterson, 51, said he was playing the card game Spades in front of a vacant lot when a police car pulled to stop in front of the players, got out with their guns drawn and told a separate group of young men hanging out a few feet away to lay on the ground.

Patterson said after a few moments passed, one of the young men got up from the ground and ran. About 30 seconds later, Patterson said, he heard six gunshots.

“What took place back there, I don't know,” he said.
