Beware online ice bucket scams, say experts

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) - It is a fundraising stunt that's gone global from local television favorites to Hollywood, it seems everyone is dousing themselves with ice cold water to collect cold hard cash for the ALS foundation.

Close to 80 million dollars has been donated to the ALS foundation. That's compared to 2.5 million the year before. Also 1.7 million new donors are likely because of the Ice Bucket Challenge.

The parents of former Tennessee Titan Tim Shaw attended an ice bucket event at Livonia Clarenceville Middle School over the weekend. The longtime linebacker challenged his hometown to get wet while using it as a platform to announce his own battle with the degenerative disease.

"He's amazed by the impact and the love we feel as we walk down this path," said John Shaw.

"We are just glad people are learning from it and understanding how it works and hopefully we can find a cure for it," said Sharon Shaw, Tim's mother.

But now scammers are also getting in on it. They are using the popularity of the pours to access your contact information and even steal your identity, said Lisa Dilg of the Better Business Bureau.

"Sometimes it's as benign as click on this and you like a page," she said. "And they sell it to a company and other times it's more dangerous and it's downloading malware on your computer."

Dilg said if it looks over the top like an outrageous video, stay clear of it because it's probably a ploy. Type in a charity's URL yourself just to be safe.

"It's frustrating we get call after call every day," Dilg said. "You feel bad for people who fall victim to a scam."

So while most of the Ice Bucket Challenges are likely okay to watch and wince over, use common sense. Someone else could get the last laugh.
