Nonprofit pairs shelter dogs with jail inmates

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -

There is a program giving inmates and dogs a second chance.

Canine Cellmates saves dogs from being euthanized and pairs them up with inmates at the Fulton County Jail.

Vandez McCloudy, 18, is behind bars for burglary but was selected to be in the Canine Cellmates program.

“I trained him how to crawl, sit, stay, wait,” said McCloudy.

Volunteers with the non-profit handpick dogs from the Fulton County animal shelter. They are all dogs slated to be euthanized.

Volunteers teach the inmates how to train the dogs and the inmates are responsible for their dogs at all times for a total of eight weeks.

“For the inmates, they learn compassion, they learn unconditional love that only a dog or animal or pet can give you. They also learn responsibility. The dog is theirs to care for 100 percent to groom, to bath, to feed,” said Emily White with Canine Cellmates.

When the eight week period is over, the dogs graduate from the program and are highly trained and ready for adoption.

The program was initiated a little over a year ago and already 25-30 dogs have gone through the program.
