State prepares as Arizona's wildfire season approaches

Arizona's wildfire season begins next month and fire officials are gearing up for what could be a busy summer for wildland fires. Governor Katie Hobbs, along with state fire managers, gave a briefing on the outlook for the 2024 wildland fire season on March 18. They say the potential for fires is especially high for southern Arizona Sonoran Desert areas.

Aubrey Fire burns 3,500 acres near Seligman

Three wildfires have merged to create a 3,500-acre blaze near Seligman. The flames were originally reported to be 800 acres when forward progress was stopped, but more accurate mapping shows the fire was a lot bigger. There are no reports of injuries or structures burned.

The largest wildfires in U.S. history

The Smokehouse Creek Fire in Texas is already the largest in the state’s history, and it’s still burning. And while everything may be bigger in Texas, the state does not claim the biggest wildfires in U.S. history.
