PHOENIX (KSAZ) - FOX 10 has learned that Paul Lopez, a political consultant in the Phoenix area, has died.
Late Wednesday afternoon, Sgt. Mercedes Fortune with Phoenix Police identified the man who died at an incident on the 6200 block of N. Central Avenue as Lopez.
According to statement issued by Sgt. Fortune Tuesday night, officers responded to the area for reports of an injured person. When officers arrived, they found Lopez, 46, with burn injuries. Lopez was taken to the hospital, and was later pronounced dead.
Sgt. Fortune said Lopez's burn injuries appear to be self-inflicted.
A profile on LinkedIn that purportedly belongs to Lopez states that he founded The Endeavor Agency in 1991. On its website, The Endeavor Agency is described as a public affairs and public relations agency.
Lopez has also served on the board of the Dougherty Foundation since 2017. The foundation, according to its website, was created in 1954, and grants scholarships to students at a number of community colleges and universities in Arizona.
Lopez was an assistant for four different Phoenix mayors, including Greg Stanton. Stanton issued a statement on Lopez's death, via a tweet made to his unverified Twitter account Wednesday night.
I couldn't ask for a better friend than Paul Lopez. Through ups and downs, good times and bad...he was always there for me and my family. He was godfather to Violet and First Communion sponsor for Trevor. I admired his love of his family and our community. RIP good friend.— Greg Stanton (@gregstantonaz) July 26, 2018
Wednesday afternoon, Phoenix City Council member Laura Pastor issued a statement on Lopez's death, saying she has known Lopez since a young age, and called him a "man of conviction and family".
