The family of a 24-year-old who was killed instantly in crash involving a Greyhound bus is speaking out about what happened.
According to DPS, Sarah Castillo Cornejo was headed the wrong way on I-10, and crashed head-on into the bus. The car Cornejo was driving was smashed into pieces, and more than a dozen people on the bus were hurt, and treated for minor injuries.
Cornejo reportedly entered the I-10 at Loop 101, and began heading west, in the eastbound lanes. Cornejo made it to Sarival Dr., before she crashed.
Cornejo was a single mother of a three-year-old girl and a one-year-old boy. Cornejo's family members said Friday they have not told the kids what happened.
"They keep asking for her," said Raymond Delgado, who is the kids' uncle. "All we can say is she's at work right now."
Cornejo recently started a new job, and is described by her family as "happy" and "ambitious".
"She was always laughing," said Delgado. "Hardly ever saw her sad. She was full of life."
On Thursday, Cornejo and her family gathered to celebrate Thanksgiving. Just hours later, Cornejo, who would have turned 24 next month, died.
Cornejo's relatives said she decided to go out for the night, after the Thanksgiving celebrations. She was heading towards home when the accident happened.
"I just couldn't believe something like this could happen," said Delgado. "There are so many indications to let you know you are going on the freeway the wrong way."
Investigators believe Cornejo may have been driving drunk.
"For everyone: if you get drunk or whatever, and you know you can't drive, you should at least try to call someone to pick you up, because stuff like this happens, and now my sister is gone," said Cornejo's sister, Leighann Rojas.
