SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (KSAZ) - Scottsdale Unified School District's superintendent, Dr. Denise Birdwell, has been placed on leave.
According to a statement released Wednesday night, the decision was made during a Special Governing Board meeting on February 21. During the meeting, the Governing Board determined that "it was in the best interest of the Scottsdale Unified School District to place Superintendent Dr. Denise Birdwell on a temporary paid administrative leave of absence."
School district officials did not release any further details on the decision, saying it is an "ongoing personnel manner".
A week ago, FOX 10 Phoenix reported on an effort to call on Dr. Birdwell to resign, citing low morale and wasteful spending as two of the reasons.
According to Dr. Birdwell's bio on the Scottsdale Unified School District website, she joined SUSD in 2016, and served as Superintendent for Higley Unified School District prior to taking up the job in Scottsdale.
