PHOENIX (KSAZ) -- Phoenix Police officials have identified the man who was killed, following a pursuit and shooting on I-17 during the evening commute Monday that involved multiple law enforcement agencies.
According to a statement released Tuesday afternoon, police officials identified the suspect as 27-year-old Arnaldo Caraveo. The incident began in Mesa, where Mesa Police officers responded at around 4:06 p.m. to a fight on the 200 block of E. 1st Avenue. The suspect was described at that point as an adult male driving a white Nissan Titan pickup truck, and had reportedly displayed a handgun during the confrontation.
When Mesa Police officers arrived, Caraveo, according to the statement, fled in the pickup. Mesa officers tried to stop him, but Caraveo did not stop. Mesa Police then requested assistance from DPS, as its officers followed the suspect onto westbound I-10, and a police pursuit was declared.
Caraveo, according to Phoenix Police, then left I-10 into northbound I-17, and assistance was requested from Phoenix Police. A DPS trooper then used his fully marked patrol car to disable the Caraveo's car, while on approach to the 7th Street exit. Caraveo then faced police, after the truck he was in rotated and stopped. Caraveo then fired numerous rounds from a rifle, striking some of the marked DPS cars, as well as unmarked Mesa cars. Five Mesa Police officers and three DPS troopers then returned fire, striking Caraveo and ending the threat. Caraveo was later declared dead by Phoenix Fire crews.
During the approach and contact with Caraveo, Phoenix Police officials said a Phoenix Special Assignments Unit officer deployed two less-lethal projectiles, and a Phoenix Police K-9 bit Caraveo, in an effort to separate him from his weapons in a safe manner.
Phoenix Police have released additional information on the Mesa Police officers and DPS troopers involved, without releasing their exact identities. The Mesa Police officers are identified as four officers and a sergeant:
According to Phoenix Police, two DPS troopers suffered non life-threatening injuries from glass during the shooting, and no other officers were injured. Phoenix Phoenix Homicide will conduct a criminal investigation with the Maricopa County Attorney's Office. Meanwhile, Mesa Police and DPS will conduct their own internal investigations.
