PHOENIX (KSAZ) - The wife of a former Phoenix Police detective made an appearance in court Tuesday to enter her plea.
Lisa Cunningham's arraignment on first-degree murder and child abuse charges was originally scheduled for two weeks ago, but she didn't show up. Cunningham is accused in the death of her 7-year-old stepdaughter.
Attorneys said two weeks ago, Cunningham attempted suicide by overdosing on medication, shortly before her arraignment. Prosecutors asked the judge to hold her in custody, on $1 million bond.
"The State believes there are funds available for Lisa Cunningham to flee the state," said Prosecutor Joshua Clark.
The judge ruled that Cunningham can remain out of custody, but must wear an ankle monitor. Meanwhile, Sanaa's biological mother, Sylvia Norwood, cried in front of the judge, asking for justice.
"There are a plethora of things the court can do," said Norwood's attorney, Quacy Smith. "We walk out of court, no jail, no bond, and that's supposed to spell justice? I think that's far from it."
Cunningham and her husband, former Phoenix Police detective Germayne Cunningham, each face 11 felony counts in connection to the death of 7-year-old Sanaa, who was Germayne's daughter.
Sanaa died nearly a year ago.
"There are passes being given, I believe, because of their law enforcement connection," said Smith, who also questioned the timing of Lisa's hospitalization. Defense attorneys provided documentation that she was hospitalized on January 4, two days after her first scheduled arraignment.
"My question is where were you sent between then," said Smith. "The dots don't connect that goes down to the core of whats happening in this case. The dots don't connect."
Prosecutors believe Lisa may flee the country to her native Australia.
