Suspect identified in deadly officer-involved shooting in Mesa

Mesa Police are investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting that happened near Maricopa Community College on Saturday morning in Mesa.

The shooting broke out at about 3am near Dobson Road and Southern Avenue, near the campus of Mesa Community College. Police say they stopped a driver, 21-year-old Anthony Lopez, for possible impairment. They say Lopez refused to follow officers' commands.

According to police spokesperson Sgt. Steve Berry, Lopez accelerated backwards, hitting one of the officers and striking a patrol vehicle. A police officer dropped his taser when the officer was struck, drew a weapon, and then opened fire on the suspect. Lopez was taken to the hospital where he later died.

Police say the officer sustained a leg injury and was taken to the hospital, but is expected to be okay. The intersection of Southern and Dobson was shut down while Mesa Police investigate the incident.
