An Arizona Department of Public Safety trooper is recovering after he was assaulted by two suspects overnight in Phoenix.

DPS says it happened at 1:30 a.m. near 27th Avenue and Thomas Road when the trooper was trying to take a suspect into custody after he pulled over a man and woman.

During the traffic stop, the trooper discovered the man had a warrant out for his arrest and when he tried to put him in handcuffs, the suspect became combative and assaulted the trooper. DPS says the woman also began attacking the trooper.

The trooper was hit in his head by the suspects, however, both suspects were eventually taken into custody.

DPS says the trooper was taken to the hospital as a precaution.
