GOODYEAR, Ariz. (KSAZ) - Basco, a 4-year-old Belgian Malinois, is the only bomb-sniffing K-9 on the Goodyear police team.
This training is the key to staying one step ahead of the bad guy.
"With the new trends coming out, it's vital we have those dogs imprinted on those odors," Officer Jared Jordan said.
Chemicals like peroxide, which are used to make bombs hidden in a single vehicle in a motorcade, like this one.
"By adding these vehicles into it, it changes the dynamic of how they search," Sgt. Brad Harding said. "The dog has to move into different spots they're not used to."
In this initiative, called the "R.E.D.D.I." program, or Regional Explosives Detection Dog Initiative, the odors are also hidden in their purest form, meaning there's no cross contamination. It's spear-headed by Homeland Security.
"We understand what the bad guy is doing and we try and think forward where they might go," Don Roberts said. "We try to understand what they're training on."
Officer Jared Jordan says Basco was successful in finding the new odor in a blind search. Even if he was put in a new environment, the team usually patrols the Goodyear Ballpark.
"When he came under that car you'll notice that he came to a sit," he said.
The goal is to be successful each and every time in real-life scenarios so the K-9 can save your life.
