PHOENIX (KSAZ) - This was Layla about six weeks ago. The bullmastiff weighed just 38 pounds.
"I first saw her, I really thought she was going to be a hospice dog," Susan Galvin said. "She was so sick, she couldn't walk."
This is Layla today. She's still hungry but much healthier and a whole lot happier.
"I took her home as a foster, I kind of thought it wouldn't be very long because of how she looks, and then miraculously, Two Pups stepped forward, Two Pups Wellness Fund said we want her to go to the doctor," Galvin said.
Melody Fercini says Two Pups was established a little over a year ago. The non-profit aims to help dogs like Layla in desperate need of medical care.
"She really looked like she was at deaths door, nothing but skin and bones," she said. "We thought it could be tick fever, parvo... we didn't know what it was, it could have been cancer, it could have been anyting."
Thanks to Two Pups, Layla was diagnosed with diabetes.
:Really feeding her and getting insulin balance with the food is the most important thing," Galvin said. "She began gaining weight. It was wonderful."
Layla's weight has doubled and has a few more pounds to gain, but doctors don't think she will have any problems doing so.
