Suspect rushed to hospital after being shot by officer in Ahwatukee

The victim was having a mental health issue and police say she opened her door with a gun.

A suspect was injured in an officer-involved shooting Wednesday, Aug. 19 in Ahwatukee, the Phoenix Police Department said.

It happened near 48th Street and Knox Road around 5:40 p.m.

Police responded to a call from mental health experts about a 22-year-old woman in an apartment who was saying she was going to hurt herself.

Officers arrived and tried to make contact with the woman. A gunshot was heard inside the apartment and that's when officers evacuated nearby apartments for the safety of neighbors.

Officers began negotiations with the woman to come out of the apartment. After about an hour after officers got to the scene and negotiated, she reportedly opened the door holding a gun.

Police say she "ignored repeated commands to drop the gun and when she raised it, one officer fired a single shot, hitting the woman’s arm causing her to drop the gun."

The woman was given immediate medical attention and she was taken to the hospital and will be OK.

She's been identified as Hannah Kyyitan.

She was booked into Maricopa County Jail on suspicion of two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer and one count of aggravated assault.

No officers were injured.
