Body of hiker recovered near Echo Canyon Trail

The body of a deceased person was recovered Tuesday, Sept. 9 after the Phoenix Fire Department discovered the body just off the Echo Canyon Trail on Camelback Mountain on Sept. 8.

A body was recovered on Tuesday, Sept. 9 after a dead person was found on Camelback Mountain Monday, the Phoenix Fire Department said.

What we know:

The Sept. 8 discovery was made just off Echo Canyon Trail at around 2 p.m.

The person's body had not been removed from the mountain on Monday due to the loss of daylight and the heat. Detectives watched over the victim's body throughout the night.

"The scene will now be a death investigation being handled by Phoenix PD," the fire department said.

Police have not identified the hiker who died, but a missing person flyer for Harald Schindler, 63, is posted at the entrance to the Echo Canyon Trail.

Schindler has been missing since Sept. 2, and police say he was last seen on foot and his rental car was found in the parking lot.

What they're saying:

"I saw fire and police here at the head of the trail," said Greg Taylor, an avid hiker.

Ashley Foret, a hiker from out of state, said she saw a team running up the trail. "We thought they were doing drills. We didn't know somebody was up there," she said.

"That's not great news to hear somebody died up there," said Chuck Klose, another out-of-state hiker.

"It's very sad to hear. It's unfortunate and I feel sorry for them and their family," Taylor said.

What we don't know:

We don't know how long the person's body was on the trail.

We don't know the cause of the person's death.

"This is a very active investigation, and any details about the cause of death or who the person is, is all part of the ongoing investigation," the Phoenix Police Department said.
