PHOENIX (AP) - The attorneys who have pressed a racial profiling lawsuit against Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio say they won't oppose the U.S. Justice Department's request to become part of the case.
The Justice Department says the judge in the profiling case is expected to order changes to sheriff's office and that the federal agency has an interest in ensuring the constitutional violations by Arpaio's office are remedied.
The judge concluded two years ago that Arpaio's office had racially profiled Latinos in regular traffic and immigration patrols.
Several weeks ago, the Justice Department and Arpaio agreed to settle a separate civil rights case that alleged the sheriff's office retaliated against the sheriff's critics and discriminated against Latinos in business raids targeting identity theft by immigrants.
